What's the Worst Thing You Can Do for Back Pain?

When your back hurts, the natural reaction is often to stop moving completely. But for many cases of back pain, prolonged bed rest is one of the worst things you can do. Staying inactive for too long can increase stiffness, reduce muscle strength, and make returning to normal activity more difficult.

Common Mistakes That Can Worsen Back Pain

Apart from prolonged rest, several habits can delay recovery:

  • Ignoring persistent or worsening pain
  • Lifting heavy objects with poor technique
  • Sitting in one position for long periods
  • Suddenly returning to intense exercise
  • Repeatedly self-medicating without identifying the cause
  • Continuing activities that trigger sharp or radiating pain

For uncomplicated back pain, gentle movement and gradual return to normal activities are often more helpful than complete inactivity.

Don't Ignore the Cause

Back pain may come from muscles, facet joints, discs, nerves, or other spinal structures. If pain keeps returning, travels into the leg, causes numbness or weakness, or significantly affects sleep and daily activities, proper assessment becomes important.

Depending on the diagnosis, pain management may include medication, activity modification, dry needling, or trigger point injection when muscular trigger points are involved. Selected patients with specific spine-related pain may also benefit from minimally invasive pain and spine procedures. A Minimally invasive pain intervention should only be considered when the pain source has been properly identified.

The Bottom Line

The worst approach to back pain is often doing nothing for too long or repeatedly treating symptoms without understanding the cause.

Stay as active as comfortably possible, avoid movements that clearly aggravate the pain, and seek specialist assessment if symptoms persist or worsen.
